Friends From the Favella

Vigdal Favella in Rio de Janiero Brazil
What are Favellas?
They are very poor areas in Brazil, South America. Many of the people who live there don’t have electricity or running water in their homes. It can be very hard for people from the Favellas to get jobs and earn a good wage.

We Y3/4 postcards from the students at the Favella and wrote back to them.
This is Juanco playing with binoculars...but he can’t see as far as Hartlepool!

Many of the buildings don’t have windows so it can be very hot or very cold.

Many of the builders don’t follow safety rules and so the buildings can be very dangerous. You can touch these electricity cable from the school windows!
Danger!!

Not many of the Families can afford to send their children to school. This school is run by volunteers. No computers and hardly any books.

Miss Hodgson’s neice works in the Favella school (she’s the tall blonde one at the back).

How can we help?
- keep on writing or emailing to the students so they can improve their English. Miss Hodgson will forward any emails for you.
- raise money for the school.
- learn more about life in a Favella.
- buy fair trade whenever you can.
- be grateful.
